All of National Geographic's staff photographers have college degrees, all have taken classes in photography, if not majored in it, though most majored in related subjects of anthropology and journalism!

Freelancers have 5-10 years experience with other publications prior to joining National Geographic. Some are photojournalists for newspapers and magazines, others specialize in wildlife, underwater, or aerial.
